Are you like me and dream of doing artwork or an art project?
Perhaps you´re an injured dancer and can´t dance at the moment? Or you’re not a dancer, but just wish to create and express yourself? There’s always something in the way or you don´t know where to start and what to choose? I assembled some suggestions to help you come up with an idea 🙂
But perhaps you already know what you want to do, which technique you´d like to try or what your result should look like? In this case my tips on how to keep being inspired and the Do´s and Don´ts of creating will help you stay motivated!
How do I choose my art project?
If you´re overwhelmed, don´t know which project you want to do or what you enjoy the most, answering these questions might help you:
- Which art project or technique did you like the most in school? Drawing? Painting? Sculpting? Handicrafts? Decorating?
- What were you best at?
- What fascinates you in art? Which techniques?
- Which materials do you like to work with? Paper? Wood? Fabric? Clay? Metal? Wool?
- Do you want to work with your hands only?
- Do you want to use a medium, like a camera or a programme to do webdesign?
- Is there something you´ve always wanted to try or learn?
- Do you have a special occasion or person in mind, for which/whom you want to create?
- Which result do you want to get? Do you want a finished artwork/object? Do you just want to try different materials and see how you can work with them?
What do I need to prepare for my art project?
- Gather and buy materials like paper, brushes, paint, pencils, special tools if you work with other materials than paper, …
- Keep your material stored together in a box that you can pull out quickly
- Decide where you want to work, perhaps set up an easel or a table
- Take your project serious and plan when you want to work on it. Make time for it every week/month and mark it in your calendar
- Tell me which project you want to work on and when you will be doing this in the comments below! This helps you keep on track 🙂 I will document my progress in following blog posts and invite you to always tell me in the comments how you are doing 🙂
How do I start and keep being inspired?
You´ve set up your creative space, sit in front of your plain white sheet of paper or displayed materials and tools – but inspiration does not come? Or you´re a little overwhelmed and don´t want to make a “bad” first step or “mistake”? Try these solutions to get in the flow:
- Set a goal or define one step
- Start making sketches on a separate sheet first
- When you´re making handicrafts: sketch your result or just get familiar with the materials
- Don´t expect to be the next Leonardo da Vinci 😉
- Creating is a process, don´t expect to get your perfect result within your first try
- Art is trial and error! Looking at your project from this perspective encourages and motivates you
The Do´s of creating
- Try everything that comes to your mind
- Inspiraton is everywhere. Keep your eyes open
- Have fun and appreciate the moment
- Learn and get inspired
The Dont´s of creating
- Being a perfectionist, when it takes away your motivation and inspiration
- Thinking that if it isn´t right at the first try, you will never make it happen
- Stressing over lacking capabilities
Instead: Give yourself room to evolve and just enjoy the process of creating and trying new things!
About my personal art project
What I want to do the most right now is designing. I have a vision for leotards, dance clothes and all sorts of ballet inspired designs that I so much desire to realize and create! Right now, I´m in the process of deciding what I want to create in the very first place. I will be able to tell you more next time!
